Pet owners stay in this Bonfire Night, Saga finds

Animal lovers plan on sacrificing their Bonfire Night this year, with 60 per cent intending to stay in with their pets, a Saga Pet Insurance survey has found.

There is a slight generation gap, with 49 per cent of under-50s planning to spend the evening at home, compared to 75 per cent of those over that age.

While Bonfire Night can be scary for animals, the survey shows owners have devised various ways to keep them happy. Turning up the TV or radio to drown out the noise has helped 35 per cent of people and 15 per cent say giving their furry friends extra exercise earlier in the day to tire them out also works.

A Saga Pet Insurance spokesperson said the use of holistic remedies is growing in popularity with and a good alternative to giving extra treats.

Alternative treatments such as massage or aromatherapy are used by five per cent of people to sooth their furry friends.

Earlier research by Saga found that 50 per cent of people surveyed were worried that their four-legged friend was overweight.
