Two-thirds are 'ethical investors', Co-operative Financial Services finds

Up to 65 per cent of investors are interested in sustainable investment themes, the Co-operative Financial Services has reported.

While only two per cent of the UK market is made up of ethical assets, the number could swell as more consumers learn how they could benefit from the economic growth in China and India, an aging global population and climate change.

The areas that are proving the most popular as potential funding opportunities are the global power shortage, with 71 per cent of financiers interested, followed by climate change and technology, both of which attracted the interest of 69 per cent of those surveyed.

The Co-operative, which specialises in sustainable opportunities, released the research to coincide with National Ethical Investment Week.

Zack Hocking, head of investments, said the results show "the important role the advice industry has to play in promoting sustainable investments to all consumers and not just those of an ethical persuasion".

The company reported in May that 18 per cent more savers intended to invest ethically following the credit crisis.
