Barnsley Building Society increases 3-year bond rate

Barnsley Building Society has increased the rate on its three-year fixed rate online bond, providing what the company calls a "market-leading" rate.

Available to new and existing customers with a minimum £100 deposit, the bond offers a return of 4.8 per cent on savings.

Customers can choose between annual or monthly interest on the product, an option that may be advantageous for customers who depend on interest for their income.

Applications can only be made online and funds are transferred by debit card to the new account. This way, interest can be earned on the cash in the time it would traditionally take a cheque to clear.

Sarah Lawrence, senior savings product manager at Barnsley Building Society, believes the product will be very popular with savers looking for a good return on their investment.

The bond joins the online saver account, which was launched last month with a 3 per cent gross interest and is instantly accessible, unlike a fixed-term account.
