AA: Drivers should be told if they are being taught by trainee

Motorists say they have a right to know if their driving instructor is a trainee, according to an AA survey.

Although trainee instructors are required by law to display a pink badge on their windscreen, 97 per cent on those surveyed believe they should be told outright by the school.

Training instructors can give lessons after passing advanced practical and theory tests, but do not sit the instruction exam until later. The pass rate for this exam is 30 per cent, meaning some novice drivers could learn from someone who never becomes fully qualified.

An additional 86 per cent think lessons should be cheaper when an instructor is learning on the job.

Edmund King, AA president, said motorists are united in their concerns over entrusting young driver in someone who is unqualified.

"One in five new drivers will have an accident within a year of passing their test, so it's only natural to want the best instruction," he said.

Recent survey results published by the insurance provider showed that 68 per cent of motorists aged 18 to 24 got their first car in their teens, compared to 28 per cent of drivers over 65 years old.
