Consumers suffer from red button phobia, says moneysupermarket.com

Many consumers are afraid to use the red button interactive services on their televisions as they believe they could incur charges for doing so, it has been asserted.

New research by moneysupermarket.com indicates that 19 per cent of adults - more than nine million people - avoid pressing the button in order to be sure that they will not have to pay anything.

The price comparison site said that there is a "lack of understanding" on the part of customers and urged providers to make it clear that red button interactive services are free of charge.

Commenting, James Parker, manager of mobiles and broadband at moneysupermarket.com, said that the spike in digital television uptake has opened up "a whole new world" of services for viewers.

"It is a shame that almost a third of users don't understand what going interactive is and, as a result, they are missing out on some great services," he added.

A recent uSwitch.com survey showed that children spend three hours per day either watching television on surfing the internet.
