With bad weather forecast over the weekend, Confused.com has offered advice for homeowners on how to protect their property from damage.

As wind is due to batter areas of the country, it is suggested that any objects that are at risk of being blown away should be secured or moved. Low-hanging branches should be removed from trees as they could snap off and cause damage.

For those who fear that their property could be at risk of flooding, the firm advised that all electrical items be unplugged and moved to higher ground. Sandbags could also be placed outside the house to prevent water getting in.

After a flood has struck, it is recommended that insurers are contacted as soon as possible and photographs should be taken of the damage sustained as this can help with claims.

Following a spate of bad weather in the summer, the comparison site experienced an upturn of 141 per cent in traffic as people searched for a quote on home cover.

Darren Black, head of home insurance with the company, advises homeowners that "comprehensive cover should be in place all year round as the weather in this country is unpredictable".
