Brits 'spend £45 a month on takeaways'

Adults in Britain spend an average of £550 a year on takeaways, a survey by just-eat.co.uk has found.

The website revealed that in the winter, the number of takeaways ordered by households more than doubles, compared to the summer months when 76 per cent prefer to make something themselves or have a barbeque.

For 89 per cent of those surveyed, a takeaway at the weekend is a treat to look forward to, with 61 per cent admitting to leaving the cooker untouched on a Friday and Saturday evening.

Research by insurance company Aviva found that 15 per cent of the people it surveyed planned to start buying more takeaways as the financial constraints of the recession began to ease.

David Buttress, UK managing director of the online takeaway service, said that consumers are willing to pay for the luxury of not having to cook for themselves, especially in the winter when takeaways can be considered comfort food.
