Charity credit cards 'convenient way to donate'

Charity credit cards can offer a way of donating to a good cause, while receiving a competitive rate of interest, according to moneysupermarket.com.

As the recession has hit, charities have seen donations slump to £9.9 billion in 2008-09, a £1.3 billion drop on the year before.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer offers a card with an APR of 15.9 per cent which donates £40 if the card is used within 90 days of opening the account. An additional 25p is given for every £100 spent thereafter.

Cards are also available for, amongst others, children's charities NSPCC and Unicef, as well as the British Heart Foundation. All the products make a contribution to their cause for every additional £100 spent on the card.


Peter Harrison, credit card expert at the price comparison site, said that using certain products can make donating easier at a time when people are struggling with their finances.

In related news First Direct pledged this month to raise £1 million for ChildLine in the North, as part of the charity's Child's Voice appeal to raise £50 million.
