Reviewing options 'can lead to energy bill savings'

Consumer can save money this winter by reassessing how they pay their bills and who they receive their energy from, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The website advises that changing payment plans from standard options paid for by cash or cheque to an online tariff, which is paid by direct debit, can save consumers an average of £253.33 a year.

The price comparison provider also found that staying with the traditional energy provider for a region can see consumers spending more than they have to, with £316 coming in as the average saving to be achieved from shopping around for a better deal.

Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, said it is crucial that bill payers find the right option for them, as "apathy won't be rewarded here - so taking action and swapping to the best deal possible is crucial".

Earlier research by the company found that, in an attempt to save money on bills, 62 per cent of householders were delaying switching on their heating.
