Which?: Withdrawing cheques not right at this time

Withdrawing cheques as a method of payment is not the right option at this time, according to Which?.

James Daley, money editor at the consumer body, said that many people, such as the housebound, still rely on paying for services by cheque.

He added that it is the main way a lot of people still chose to pay tradespeople and some businesses will still only accept payment via this method.

"Until we've seen some cheap safe alternatives put in place, then we certainly wouldn't want to see the abolition of cheques," he added.

His comments followed the announcement by the Payments Council that a vote to decide if the payment for goods by cheque will be abolished is to take place on December 16th of this year.

In addition, UK Domestic Cheque Guarantee Card Scheme announced that the scheme would be closing on 30th June 2010, meaning that it will no longer be possible to guarantee a payment using this method after that date.
