There are a range of different methods older people can use to help them to stay warm, include signing up for free cavity wall insulation that is available to all individuals aged 70 years or over.
Those who spend over ten per cent of their annual income on their fuel bills will be considered to be living in fuel poverty and, as a result, can receive help from their energy supplier in the form of being moved to the equivalent of the cheapest tariff they offer.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, said that while there is pressure on energy a provider to reduce the price of their bills, such a move is unlikely to come before the cold weather arrives.
"There are, nevertheless, already measures in place to help the elderly keep warmer this winter and it's vital to take advantage of them," he added.
Last month, the website reminded people to be wary of carbon monoxide poisoning this winter, as the gas can escape from faulty or ill-fitting gas appliances.
