Average water bill predicted to drop

The average cost of household water bills is predicted to fall by 2015, Ofwat has reported.

Bills are predicted to reduce by £3 to £340 in the next five years, before inflation is taken into consideration.

Ofwat sees bills being about £34 lower by 2015, 10 per cent lower than what water companies are proposing.

Around £22 billion is to be invested into maintaining and improving water services, with the water regulator overseeing where and how the providers are spending this money.

The investment works out to more than £935 being spent on supplying water to every household in Britain.

Regina Finn, Ofwat chief executive officer, said: "Customers have told us that they want us to keep water and sewage charges flat while maintaining a safe, reliable supply of water. That's what we've delivered."

Concerns about paying for water bills led to an 80 per cent increase in customers applying for WaterSure tariffs in the last two years, resulting in 29,000 people being on the price plan as of September this year.
