Consumers "more willing to spend"

Consumers are becoming increasingly willing to reach into their wallets and spend, it has been asserted.

Richard Dodd of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) made his comments after the publication of the most recent Online Business Index by web auction site eBay earlier this month.

The research showed that 51 per cent of online firms are expecting a stronger Christmas this year than 2008.

Mr Dodd said there is "no question" that the figures are encouraging.

"There is some return of consumer confidence and [...] some customers are more willing to spend than they were," he added.

However, Mr Dodd noted that the numbers are based on a comparison with the "dire conditions" of 12 months ago, urging people not to rejoice just yet.

Concluding, the BRC representative said that there is no doubt that the financial landscape is better than it was a year ago, but stated that there is still some way to go before things are back on an even keel.
