"Savings culture" needed in the UK

Consumers need to be increasingly encouraged to make savings for their futures, it has been asserted.

The Association of Independent Financial Advisers made its comments in its pre-Budget submission, which was published yesterday (November 30th).

It said that the government needs to take steps to promote a "savings culture" in the UK, so that people are better placed to cope with drains on their finances.

The body also stated that an overhaul of the pensions sector is needed, claiming that much legislation on this topic is based on "an outdated view of retirement", as well as "historical" facts about people's life expectancy.

In other news, online comparison site unbiased.co.uk recently published research indicating that up to £2.4 billion in pension credits will not be claimed be people who are entitled to them this year, despite older people being particularly affected by the recession.
