Virgin Money: Be careful of cars around Christmas

Virgin Money Car Insurance has warned that the last Saturday before Christmas Day is the worst day for car claims.

December 19th is the date that most insurance claims are put in, with 40 per cent more than the monthly average.

Claims increase for both accidents and thefts from cars, which is thought to be down to shoppers rushing with cars laden up with last-minute purchases.

On Christmas Eve, claims are slightly below average, with New Year's Eve being just above the month's average number of claims.

Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money: "With more drivers on the road and cars potentially loaded up with presents it can be a dangerous time for claims."

According to research by the company, October 20th is the worst day of the year for car accidents, with an average of 10.4 per cent of all car claims happening over the course of the month. The majority of accidents happen in the last three months of the year, accounting for 30 per cent of annual claims.
