Axa: British drives among best in Europe

British drivers are among those most likely to abide by the law and drive safely in Europe, according to Axa.

Assessing 11 different behaviours, including those that have to be adhered to by law, as well as general courteousness, Axa found that British drivers came second only to Ireland for their dedication to motoring.

Just four per cent of British drivers say they have driven while under the influence of alcohol, compared an average of 21 per cent across the rest of Europe.

Chris Voller, head of motor claims at Axa, said that different rules could act as a deterrent in individual counties, such as the number of speed cameras in the UK.

"But, it is good to see Brits score so well not just on legal requirements but on behaviours that are simply a matter of safe driving such as tailgating," he added.

During the summer, the company reminded tourists of the importance of travel insurance, as costs to get home after suffering an injury can cost up to £2,000 if people are left to foot the bill without any help from an insurance firm.
