Smart meters welcomed by uSwich.com

The announcement that smart meters are to be installed in all British homes by 2020 has been welcomed by uSwitch.com.

However, the company believes that there are problems that still need to be addressed before the roll-out can begin.

Educating consumers about the worth of the meters is a main priority to be met, as well as addressing their concerns about how much installing a meter in every household is likely to add to fuel bills.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Our research shows that only 19 per cent of consumers believe that a significant increase in household energy bills is a price worth paying and 57 per cent of people are not even aware of what smart meters are."

The government stated in its report into the meters that the devices will aid the shift from traditional sources of energy to low-carbon methods such as wind and nuclear. It also plans to make energy suppliers responsible for installing the meters.
