Women 'prioritise family over savings'

Women are likely to have stopped saving for their future as a result of having children, research by Scottish Widows has shown.

Of the ladies surveyed, 24 per cent have stopped putting money aside as they stopped working to have children.

Despite 47 per cent of women giving up full-time employment in order to raise their families, 36 per cent said that it is unrealistic to expect their partner's pension to be enough for both of them in old age.

Alison Morris, savings expert for Scottish Widows said: "We want women to understand the impact that career breaks have on their pensions and encourage them to do what they can to minimise this."

She advised that starting contributions again as soon as is possible after having kids, or making overpayments before or after the break from employment, can help to top up an account that has fallen behind.

Last month, the pension provider launched a series of new benefits to their retirement account, which offers a rate of 2.6 per cent AER.
