AA: Get holiday insurance before hitting the slopes

It is essential that holidaymakers who plan to jet off and enjoy winter sports this year take out adequate insurance first, according to the AA.

If individuals suffer an accident, they can be liable to pay medical costs, as well as the price of getting them back home. In extreme cases, helicopters may be needed to rescue injured skiers, which they will also have to pay for themselves.

Being treated for a broken leg in the US can cost up to £10,000 in medical bills, while the same injury in Europe require £4,000 to be spent on treatments, making for a very costly holiday.

Christian Young, director of AA travel insurance, said that as winter sports trips become more popular, the slopes are getting overcrowded.

He added that: "Overcrowding is also tempting people to take risks - such as skiing off-piste, away from the throng, without a guide which obviously can be dangerous."

Earlier in the year, the AA advised travellers to always think through where they choose to go on holiday before they book.
