Car insurance prices 'a postcode lottery'

The cost of car insurance can vary greatly depending on where you live in the country, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Research by the price comparison site established that the cheapest place in the UK for car insurance was in Truro in Cornwall, where £355.72 was found to be the average rate paid by drivers

Overall, motorists in Scotland see the lowest prices for the insurance, with seven postcodes in the country taking places in the top ten cheapest areas.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said those who live in an area deemed to be high risk due to crime levels may find they are paying a lot, despite being good drivers

"Insurers who don't assess motor insurance on an individual basis may adopt a blanket approach and many motorists could find their insurance is quite high to compensate for this," he added.

Last month, moneysupermarket.com found that men pay as much as 71 per cent more than women on their insurance premiums.
