Three days a month 'spent online'

British adults spend an average of three days every month surfing the internet, research by moneysupermaket.com has found.

Over the course of a month, 68 hours are spent on the net across those surveyed. In addition, respondents also admitted to chatting on the phone for up to seven hours over the course of a month.

Using the web or mobile phones to stay in touch with loved ones has become so commonplace that 59 per cent of those questioned said they would not know how to keep in contact with loved ones without them.

Julie Owens, broadband and mobiles spokesperson at moneysupermarket.com, said that as people become more reliant on new technology to keep in touch, it is essential that they ensure they are getting the best value for money.

"If people are using the internet or mobile phone for large periods of time, then I would urge them to check they are on a deal that suits their needs," she added.

Last month, the price comparison site warned that without taking proper precautions to protect Wi-Fi connections, people could be using them for free by logging on to networks that do not have a security code.
