Barclaycard: 5m contactless cards in use

There are now five million contactless cards being used in the UK, according to Barclaycard.

Contactless cards allow customers to pay for items worth £10 or under without the need to enter their pin numbers.

The technology is in use across 380 Caffe Nero stores in Britain, as well as all 199 Pret a Manger shops.

There are now 20,000 individual outlets that accept the technology. Other brands that accept the cards include Yo! Sushi and the National Trust.

Amer Sajed, chief executive of Barclaycard UK, business and international at Barclaycard, said: "Consumer feedback highlights the increasing demand for contactless payment and we expect to see more retailers follow Caffe Nero and Pret A Manger and sign up to contactless in the near future."

During the postal strike in October, Barclaycard advised their customers to manager their accounts online using the mybarclaycard online account management system. The service provides customers with secure payment options, including direct debit, so they do not miss payment deadlines.
