Leaving possessions in cars leaves people open to theft

Fewer motorists are taking precautions to ensure that their possessions are hidden when they are left in their cars, according to Admiral Insurance.

Following research among the firm's customers, it was found that 73 per cent of motorists had left their belongings on display in their car when unattended, which is up from the 71 per cent who admitted to doing it last year.

The most common items left on display were coats and jackets, but CDs, mp3s and handbags are also frequently left unattended.

Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said: "It's a worrying trend that more motorists are happy to leave expensive items on show in their cars. It only takes seconds for an opportunistic car thief to break a car window and grab what's inside."

The motoring insurance provider found earlier this year that 45 per cent of drivers admit to being more likely to lose concentration while driving if they are stressed when they get behind the wheel.
