Parents 'need to check their child tax credit entitlement'

Parents of young children need to check that they are receiving their full entitlement of child tax credits, according to the Daycare Trust.

Emma Knights, joint chief executive at the Daycare Trust, said that many parents do not realise they are entitled to childcare tax credits, as the income threshold goes higher than people may think, resulting in many who are entitled to the support missing out on it completely.

"If you are a family who is paying for childcare you should absolutely check your entitlement," Ms Knight advised.

The latest reports on the scheme by Gordon Brown have stated that all families who currently receive the vouchers, which go towards their childcare costs, will continue to do so. The tax relief they get will also remain the same, even if additional childcare vouchers are issued in the future.

From April 2011, all new recipients of the vouchers will have the same tax relief as those on basic rate tax, to ensure that the system is not giving disproportionate financial help parents in higher tax bracket.
