'Cheaper insurance for young drivers' with GPS system

Younger drivers could find they have cheaper car insurance rates if they use a new GPS system.

Nigel Humphreys, spokesperson for the Association of British Drivers, said that while some people will object to the scheme, others will embrace it as it will mean cheaper insurance costs for them.

The GPS system, introduced by Young Marmalade insurance, restricts 17 to 25-year-olds from driving between the hours of 11pm and 5am. Those who drive at these times incur a £45 charge.

In addition, the scheme could benefit other drivers, according to Mr Humphreys, as there could be fewer accidents. However, if it is not spread across the board, it could mean an increase in the cost of insurance for young drivers who do not sign up the scheme.

Research published by moneysupermarket.com in November revealed that a male motorist of 17 years of age will pay over £1,000 more than a female driver of the same age for their car insurance.
