Record seasonal spending levels predicted by Barclaycard

Barclaycard estimates that consumers will spend record sums on Christmas this year, despite the current economic downturn.

The credit card company predicted that more than £23 billion will be spent by shoppers on making their festive season memorable.

Brian Cunnington, Head of Debit Cards for Barclays, said that for those who are concerned about their spending levels, debit cards provide a good alternative because they only use funds that are already present in the holder's bank account.

He added: "We would remind customers to be careful to take care of their card and their pin, especially when using their pin in crowded places."

To help their customers keep track of their finances while on the move, Barclaycard announced in September that it had improved its mobile banking service, which includes a quick-access log-in for consumer who only wish to view their balance.
