Remember to give Gift Aid to charity, expert says

Those who are feeling in a charitable mood this Christmas need to remember to give their consent for their donations to receive Gift Aid, according to unbiased.com.

In 2007-08, £9.9 million was given to good causes by generous individuals throughout the UK. However, up to £1.2 billion was given to the tax man as many did not opt into the Gift Aid scheme.

By doing so, the donor is consenting to the charity being able to claim basic rate tax on the cash they gave.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.com, said: "With almost 28 million Brits donating to charity in a typical month, UK taxpayers remain very generous with their donations. It is unfortunate that not all donations are being made in a tax-efficient manner."

Those who wish to make sure their money goes to a good cause after they pass away should ensure they have an up to date will. Earlier in the year, the website warned that many people have not updated their will in the past five years, meaning that some of their loved ones could be at risk of losing out on inheritance.
