Keep out the cold with expert advice from Confused.com

As the temperature plummets, Confused.com has offered some tips on how to keep out the cold this winter.

Homeowners should act now before the cold weather sets in to make sure that their home is kept as weather-proof as possible. Lofts should be ventilated to ensure that no heat is escaping through the roof.

Steps should also be taken to protect pipes from freezing or bursting in the freezing conditions. Boilers should also be serviced to check that they are working properly and not releasing dangerous carbon monoxide.

Darren Black, head of home insurance at Confused.com, said: "Prevention is certainly better than cure when it comes to an emergency in the home, so people need to clear out guttering, lag pipes and wrap up any outside taps."

In addition, the price comparison site recommends that the elderly should find out what is available to them to keep them warm this winter. Households with a resident aged over 70 years are entitled to free loft and cavity wall insulation.
