Check phone tariffs 'before going abroad'

Holidaymakers looking to jet off to some winter sun or skiing trips should check their mobile phone tariffs before they use them abroad, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Many providers offer a cheaper option for using their phones abroad than with the standard plans, so consumers can do well from shopping around of a better deal.

Vodafone Passport is a free service which enables users to make calls at their normal rate with a 75p connection charge in 35 European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

There are also flat-rate charges available with O2 and Orange, with users paying a small monthly fee.

Julie Owens, spokesperson at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Before jetting off be sure to check with your operator how much calls, texts and internet use will cost when at your chosen destination."

With as many as 29 per cent deciding to send text messages this year in place of sending Christmas cards, a figure found by moneysupermarket.com earlier this year, finding the best mobile phone tariff could mean big savings for consumers.
