Brits spend £157m on pets, says gocompare.com

This Christmas, pet owners are predicted to spend a combined total of £157 million on their animals.

According to research by gocompare.com, animal lovers will be forking out an average of £10.86 in Christmas presents for each of their furry friends.

The top gift for pets is special treats, with 59 per cent of shoppers opting for this, with toys coming in second with 56 per cent buying them for their four-legged friends.

Lee Griffin, business development director at gocompare.com, reminded animal owners that taking care of their pets is just as important during the rest of the year as at Christmas

"Vet's bills can rival the post-Christmas January credit card statement when it comes to unwelcome surprises, therefore having insurance to cover such events can make a lot of sense," he added.

Gocompare.com launched its comparison site for pet insurance in October, with 16 different polices for cover on creatures available for price comparison, making it easy to pick the right type of policy for the pet - and the owner.
