Sainsbury's: £10.6bn withdrawn from cash machines this month

This month, up to £10.6 billion could be withdrawn by shoppers from cash machines in the UK, according to Sainsbury's Finance.

That works out to a staggering £237,100 being withdrawn every minute. Overall, the amount is £619 million more than was taken out of ATMs at this time last year.

Sainsbury's Finance also found that, after assessing the amount of cash that was paid out each month between 2004 and 2009, there is on average a 12.4 per cent increase in the amount withdrawn in December compared to the rest of the year.

Alex Blake, head of ATMs at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "This party season, make sure you don't leave getting your cash to the last minute - why not get your spending money whilst you're doing your shopping."

In November, Sainsbury's reminded consumers that their credit card offers cashback on purchases, offering two per cent back on their spending in store in the form of Nectar points, that can be spent in Sainsbury's stores.
