Bad weather sees a third more claims to AA

The snow and icy conditions has seen the number of insurance claims for car accidents increase by 31 per cent, the AA has reported.

By midday on December 18th, there had been 381 claims made, compared to the average of 291 claims normally made on a Friday morning in winter.

Incidents that were reported included colliding with stationary objects, as well as tail-end collisions. At least two claims were for excess snow falling off passing vehicles and hitting other cars or pedestrians.

Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, said: "Our advice is clear: in such conditions, don't take your car out unless it is absolutely essential to do so. Keep your speed down and in as high a gear as possible."

In November, the AA found that 69 per cent of the people it questioned agreed with the government's plans to introduce a new law which will make it an offence to keep a vehicle without insurance.
