Which?: Energy bills up by 2020

The cost of energy bills in houses that are badly insulated could increase by 2020, according to Which?.

It was estimated by the consumer group that the cost of bills could rise by up to 35 per cent, meaning that a three-bedroomed semi-detached home could see its charges increase by £2,600.

In addition to 28 per cent of people who are already worried about how they will pay their bills, 73 per cent are concerned over how much they will cost in the future.

Which? editor Martyn Hocking said: "Energy is going to get a lot more expensive over the next decade so the only way to avoid bigger bills is to use less of it."

He warned that, without additional government help, as many as four million people could fall into fuel poverty by the end of the next decade.

A survey carried out by Which? last month found that consumers would much rather have payments that would take them over their overdrafts stopped, rather than having to pay overdraft charges.
