Halifax: Protect home from cold this winter

Checking a property is properly protected against the weather this winter can prevent the need for insurance pay-outs.

Halifax has offered advice for homeowners to help ensure their properties remain safe from water damage during the cold snap.

To prevent water from leaking, insulate pipes to make sure they do not freeze in the cold and crack.

If a pipe does burst, consumers should turn off the water at the supply to prevent further leaks and contact their insurance provider.

Senior claims manager for Halifax home insurance Martyn Foulds said: "Most homeowners worry about risks like burglary and fire in the home, but actually water damage is one of the most common types of home insurance claim we see."

Halifax also warned those concerned about flooding to make sure they turn off electricity supplies and move items to higher ground to protect them from water damage.
