Consumers can submit gas readings for 'accurate bills'

Consumers should look to submit their gas readings every quarter to ensure they are being billed correctly, according to one financial expert.

Stephen Ratcliffe, energy product manager at BeatThatQuote.com, said bills will accurately represent how much gas has been used during a quarter if the consumer submits the reading to their supplier, making it less likely that they will be overcharged for the amount they have used.

Gas companies are only required to read meters once every two years. If up-to-date readings are not submitted by the householder, their bills will be based on their past gas consumption.

As new smart meters are introduced, they will stop the need for estimated readings and provide bills to customers based on the amount of gas they have actually used.

According to recent research by uSwich.com, 86 per cent of consumers who were asked to add up an energy bill got it wrong, despite being allowed to take notes and use a calculator.
