Watching TV online 'has download penalty risk'

Consumers who watch a lot of television over the internet are at risk of passing their download limit and incurring charges, according to Broadbandchoices.co.uk.

Research by the website has found that 32 per cent of broadband users are planning to watch more TV over the internet during the festive season. However, they are putting themselves at risk of passing their fair usage limits and facing costs.

When a household passes its download limit, it can result in a user receiving charges, or having their connection speed restricted by their supplier.

Michael Phillips, product director, said: "With the whole family at home and using online services this Christmas, we strongly urge broadband customers to start monitoring their levels of downloading."

With some consumers potentially thinking of giving gifts of wireless internet dongles this Christmas, Broadbandchoices.co.uk advised consumers to check the coverage in their area before they buy, as well as considering the memory size and download limits.
