AA: Car claims doubled on Monday

The number of car insurance claims received by the AA on December 21st was almost double what it would expect to receive on the average Monday in winter.

By 17:30 GMT on the day in question, the company had received more than 500 claims for damage to vehicles.

As most accidents were taking place at low speeds, there were no injuries reported to the insurance provider.

Roadside patrols offered by the AA were also reporting high levels of activity, with over 16,000 being taken by 15:00 GMT on the same day.

The busiest day of the year for the AA was February 2nd, when snowfall resulted in claims from 800 of its insurance customers.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Our role first and foremost is to offer help, advice and a sympathetic ear - and help them decide on the next best course of action."

These new claims follow on from more than 100 applications for insurance payments that the firm had received before lunchtime on Friday, following the first wave of heavy snowfall.
