Homeowners offered advice on reducing bills

UK homeowners have been offered advice on how to reduce their energy bills this winter.

Figures from uSwitch.com show that the average household currently faces an annual energy bill of £1,239, representing a 36 per cent increase compared to 2008.

Heating costs account for around 42 per cent of people's overall energy bills, with most of this being racked up during the winter months.

Will Marples, an energy expert at the website, said that rather than sitting back and waiting for prices to fall, consumers should take steps to cut costs themselves.

"Moving to dual fuel, paying by direct debit and signing up to an online plan will all help save money. Online energy plans are around £300 a year cheaper than standard energy plans," he commented.

Other top tips include taking regular meter readings to ensure bills are accurate and improving insulation within the home.

In related news, consumer group Which? recently advised Britons that they can save money by having a free water meter installed in their property.
