Divorce surge 'expected in January'

The number of people who reach a financial settlement on their divorce is expected to increase this month, according to unbiased.co.uk.

While January is traditionally a time when couples move towards divorce agreements, there is expected to be a larger number than usual settling their finances, as many individuals may have waited for economic conditions to improve before taking the final steps.

It is estimated that as many as 48 per cent of divorce proceedings have been prolonged in a bid to wait until the value of their assets have increased.

Karen Barrett, chief executive of unbiased.co.uk said: "Getting a divorce can be a stressful enough process without also waiting to reach a financial settlement for a prolonged period of time. A family solicitor will help you through the divorce process."

The number of people paying into their savings declined in the third quarter of 2009 by £6 billion compared with the previous quarter, according to unbiased.co.uk, although debt levels only dropped slightly.
