Cold weather pushes up energy bills

Fuel bills are estimated to increase by as much as £60 during January if the cold weather continues, uSwitch.com has reported.

On average it costs £3 a day to heat a home, but this could increase by £1 a day as homeowners attempt to keep out the chill.

However, recent reports that increased demand could result in consumers seeing their energy bills going up are misleading, as energy firms buy their stocks in advance, meaning prices are unlikely to rise into the medium term.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Higher demand because of sub-zero temperatures and the current rationing of energy to certain businesses does not mean suppliers will need to increase household energy prices."

Last year, the comparison website advised consumers that one way to beat increasing prices was to switch to another supplier or get a dual fuel package as they are often more affordable.
