Saga: Stocks and shares a preferred form of investment

Many over-50s are looking to put their cash into stocks and shares this year in a bid to make big returns on their cash, Saga has reported.

Men are more enthusiastic about taking a gamble with their cash to make big money, with 46 per cent planning on putting their funds on to the stock market, compared to 31 per cent of women.

It appears that some are looking for an alternative form of investment as they do not believe that the economic crisis will end in 2010, with only 12 per cent thinking the worst will be over at the start of this year.

Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of the Saga Group, said: "Despite the difficult investment environment, successful stock picking could prove a key method of increasing funds this year."

Last month Saga reported that 52 per cent of homeowners aged over 60 who were withdrawing equity from their properties were then using it to fund some home improvement work.
