Over 1m paying their rent with credit cards

More than a million people in the UK are paying off their rent or mortgage using their credit cards, it has been stated.

Homeless charity Shelter found that six per cent of respondents admitted to using their cards to keep up-to-date with their payments.

While it is mainly people in working class jobs who are paying off their debts using plastic, the poll also discovered that four per cent of middle to upper class people were accruing credit debt when paying their rent.

The charity is concerned that those who find they cannot pay their credit card bills will end up losing their homes if their property is repossessed.

Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, said: "If people are already struggling to the extent that they fear losing their home, increasing credit card debt cannot be the answer."

It was also recently found by the charity that 27 per cent of people were cutting down on their fuel consumption this winter in order to have the funds to pay their mortgage.
