Parents 'prioritise work over families'

Many parents are putting their careers ahead of their home lives and are experiencing regret because of it, a study has found.

Research carried out by Scottish Widows has found that 32 per cent of parents wished they spent more time with their family and friends, with 34 per cent thinking that they need to spend more time with their children.

By contrast, just two per cent of people wish that they were spending more time on their careers.

Alison Morris, savings expert for Scottish Widows, said: "Its understandable parents want to work hard to provide for their children's futures, but they could be missing out on spending valuable time with them growing up."

Getting the balance right can be difficult for many, but especially for women. Scottish Widows found last month that mothers who leave their jobs to raise their children end up with large shortfalls in their pensions when they retire.
