M&S Home Insurance reveals increase in emergency claims

M&S Home Insurance has published new figures showing there were three times more emergency claims during the 2009 winter months than in the summer.

The company revealed that water claims were the most common during the period - up 200 per cent compared with earlier in the year - and suggested burst pipes were a big contributor.

David Wells, head of insurance, indicated that further increases are expected over the course of January and February as plumbing and central heating systems feel the strain of the current cold snap.

In addition, he suggested it would be wise to have emergency home insurance cover.

"At this time of year, if you don't ... unexpected plumbing bills are not going to be welcomed," he commented. "Certified plumbers called out to fix a leaking pipe can charge around £65-85 an hour."

His remarks follow those of Virgin Money spokesman Grant Bather, who said earlier this week that homeowners should ensure they have adequate insurance in place to cover the cost of water claims.
