House price concerns force many to delay having children

The high cost of housing is forcing many to reconsider having children, according to reports from homeless charity Shelter.

It is estimated that 18 per cent of adults aged 18 to 44 years old are postponing having children due to the high cost of housing, a figure which represents 2.4 million people nationally.

In addition to this, 22 per cent of people in the same age group have put off starting a family by six years, with 37 per cent believing they will postpone having kids by another four years due to housing costs.

Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, said: "While it is responsible to ensure that you can afford to support a new baby, it is completely unacceptable that housing costs are changing important life decisions like starting a family."

This news follows the recent statistics published by Shelter which found that as many as one million households have used their credit cards to pay for their mortgage or rent in the last twelve months.
