New quote guidelines for doorstep salesmen

A new system has been introduced under which doorstep energy salesmen must provide customers with a written quote before they can make a sale.

According to uSwitch.com's director of consumer policy Ann Robinson, the rules - which also apply to shops - give consumers the opportunity to "protect themselves" by enabling them to compare the quotes with other deals.

However, she suggested people still need to be careful as issues such as salesmen only representing one supplier and not giving enough information have yet to be tackled.

"The key thing is that consumers understand that the quote is not a guarantee that they will be saving money. Direct salesmen are not obliged to tell people about their company's most competitive plans," Ms Robinson remarked.

The advice follows last week's warning from uSwitch.com energy expert Tom Lyon that if the winter cold snap continues into February, household energy bills could end up £60 more expensive.

He recommended that people begin thinking about budgeting for the extra cost in order to be prepared.
