Working aged people 'face biggest inflation blow'

People of working age are the most likely to feel the pinch from the increase in inflation, the Alliance Trust has reported.

The recent sharp rise in rates means that people aged 30 to 64 years old are going to experience the highest increases in inflation, with rates climbing to more than four per cent.

For individuals in the higher working age bracket of 50 to 64 years, they experienced the biggest jump between November and December 2009, as inflation increased from 2.8 per cent to 4.1 per cent.

It is a change in the trend from the previous month, when it was people in the 30 to 49 age group who were most affected by inflation.

Shona Dobbie, head of the Alliance Trust Research Centre, said: "Working age groups now face an inflation rate of more than 4 per cent, but average earnings have grown by only 1.5 per cent over the last year, which highlights the sharp erosion of purchasing power."
