Due to the bad weather experienced by most of the country in recent weeks, some insurance firms have seen the number of claims made by drivers double this month compared with January 2009.
Will Thomas, head of motor at Confused.com, said: "When you consider the average premium in 2009 was £400 that's a lot of money to lose and let's face it, there are far better things you could be spending it on."
He advised consumers to shop around if they are concerned that their insurance costs could increase this year.
Motorists who hold their insurance policy with Zurich could be particularly interested in looking for a better deal, after confused.com stated that the company's premiums were to increase by 20 per cent this year.
