Number of illness payments 'on the increase'

The number of people who are making claims for illness is increasing, Zurich UK Life has reported.

Critical illness figures for 2009 show a 28 per cent rise in the amount of claims that have been paid out since 2005.

It is the fourth consecutive year of increases, with 814 cases settled last year. The number of claims which were declined remained static at nine per cent, with eight per cent being refused due to the definition of the illness not being met.

A further one per cent was turned down due to non-disclosure of the illness by the customer.

Phil Brown, underwriting and claims director for Zurich UK Life, commented on the payouts: "The causes of critical illness claims remain similar, though stroke has replaced multiple sclerosis as the third most common condition."

In order to help more people to find a way of keeping their insurance cover in times of economic uncertainty, Zurich created a support pack to help its advisors provide their clients with the best possible advice should the worst happen.
