Over 50s may find employment more easily

The increased retirement age may make it easier for individuals over 50 to find a job, it has been suggested.

Laith Khalaf, pensions analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said that a change in the law, which may see the age of retirement increase to 70, could mean that more people in their 50s will find it easier to get back into work.

Currently, there is an issue that if the state pension age does increase a situation will arise with people leaving their jobs at 65 and having to wait until they have turned 68 before they can draw their state pensions, he said.

The result of this could be that the retirement age is increased by another five years, or it may be abolished altogether.

These possible reforms have coincided with the launch of proposals by the Equality and Human Rights Commission to change employment policies and create more job opportunities that would allow older people to remain in the workforce for longer.
